Mr. Rajat Shikhar -B.Tech.-2001
Distinguished Alumnus Award - Entrepreneurial Excellence
Mr. Rajat Shikhar, Co-Founder & CPTO at Dealshare, has been part of the Indian e-commerce ecosystem for more than 15 years and contributed to building products and technology from e-com 1.0 to social commerce. In this exciting journey he has been associated with brands like Myntra, Jabong, Foodpanda. His deep understanding and expertise in ecommerce business and tech has culminated in him co-founding Dealshare, a 3.5-year startup which is now a unicorn at 1.7 bn valuation.
Dealshare is aimed at solving mass market e-commerce problems from first principles. He has been building technology and product experience for Dealshare since its inception. Launched in September 2018 in Jaipur, e-retail startup DealShare became a household name in less than three years. DealShare joined the coveted unicorn club in January 2022. Mr. Rajat and other founders were determined to take the e-commerce experience to India’s low-and mid-income population. The founders wanted to create a tech-enabled model for the Indian mass market that would allow customers to buy together, save money and at the same time have fun.
To fulfil their vision, they targeted customers who were still getting used to the Internet for commerce and for whom big e- commerce players were not an ideal option. After its success in the western Indian state of Rajasthan, DealShare expanded its geographic reach. It first ventured into four more neighbouring states and then extended its operations to cities and towns in a few more distant states. Currently, it is present in 12 states and ~120 locations.
Ms. Rashmi Verma, Co-Founder & Director, MapmyIndia. She is one of India’s first woman tech entrepreneurs. Armed with the problem-solving capability offered by the rigorous engineering education offered at IIT Roorkee (then University of Roorkee) and subsequent MS at Eastern Washington University, USA, she was able to garner and chalk out a coveted career in software arena at IBM, USA, where she rapidly grew to become a consultant to the IBM Global Business Services during a time when IBM’s pioneering foray into professional software technology consulting had made such careers even within IBM highly prized.
After 12 years of successful career and a settled life, Rashmi and her husband headed for India to fulfil their destiny, and found MapmyIndia, India’s first and only Digital Map Product Company and one of India’s most successful tech companies.
While navigating a whole slew of challenges in a country where organizations and citizens did not consider digital maps at all, she persevered getting the entire country mapped digitally until comprehensive map and data of India was created. Again, at a time when IT sector in India mainly meant internationally packaged software sales and custom software and data services, she took a leadership position of charting MapmyIndia into a product company and launched MapmyIndia Maps as a packaged product.

Shri. Harish Kumar - MSc. - 1993
Distinguished Alumnus Award - Excellence in Service to The Society
Shri. Harish Kumar, Founder- Ability on Wheels, is a differently abled person with a passion for driving. In 2012 he became the first physically challenged person in the country to successfully complete an All India Driving Expedition thereby creating a new National Records in Limca Book of Records. As on date he has on his name 2 National Records in Limca Book of Records.
After working in Telecom Sector for ~ 20 years he quit the corporate world in 2015 and decided to work on providing mobility services and solutions to the differently abled people of the country. For this purpose, he floated an NGO Ability on Wheels Charitable Trust. The people with disabilities do face lots of challenges and hurdles in mobility. There is not even a single driving school for the differently abled, there are no wheel chair accessible vehicles and also the public transport, in general, is not disability friendly. Since Shri. Harish himself experienced these hurdles, he decided to work on this cause and be a contributor to the society. According to him, there are an estimated 7 million people in the country who are physically challenged with mobility restrictions and every year ~ 1 lakh people get added in the list.
ABILITY ON WHEELS, the NGO founded by Shri. Harish, is an effort to encourage the differently abled people to take a big leap towards leading a normal life by providing mobility and accessibility services and solutions. As a first step in this direction Ability on Wheels has launched a first of its kind in the country driving school exclusively for the differently abled using customized cars in Ahmedabad. Today the physically challenged people have to first buy a car, get it modified and only then they are provided with a learner’s license. This deprives them of the right to first learn and then buy a car. Also, since there is no such driving school they have to learn on their own. Due to this big stumbling block many physically challenged people hesitate in buying a car and hence are deprived of the freedom and independence. Thousands of people with disabilities have availed the services of Wheelchair Accessible Cab Service including Ms. Deepa Malik, a Padma awardee Para Olympian. Shri. Harish has also penned a book on disability & driving titled Ability on Wheels. This book is an attempt to raise the awareness levels for both people with disabilities and also the Transport department officials / policy makers in the government. The efforts of Shri. Harish towards the cause of differently abled people of the country were very much appreciated by the then Defence Minister Sh. Manohar Parikkar.
Shri. Mohinder L. Nayyar is ASME Life Fellow and recipient of 2016 Distinguished Alumnus Award of IIT Roorkee. Shri Mohinder Nayyar is an internationally recognized specialist in piping, valves, materials and codes and standards. As a senior principal engineer at Bechtel Power Corp, his work spanned all phases of design, construction, operation, maintenance and in-service inspection at more than 100 major power plants. Working with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and ASME, he helped develop new codes and standards following the accident at Three Mile Island. Mr. Nayyar is author and editor-in-chief of Piping Handbook (6th and 7th editions, 1992) and Piping Databook (2002).
Earlier many US-based alumni were facing difficulty in donating to IIT Roorkee as there was no Foundation in the US that could transfer the full amount of the donation to be made to the alma mater. Further, there was an urgent need for a simple and speedy process. To fill this serious gap, Shri Mohinder Nayyar initiated the establishment of IIT Roorkee Foundation in the US. Shri Nayyar, one of the top donors of IITR who has donated more than Rs. 2.50 Crores, gladly invested a significant amount of personal time and effort to undertake this important task. Shri Nayyar single-handedly made arduous efforts for several months and eventually succeeded in establishing IIT Roorkee Foundation, Inc. in September 2019.
The Foundation has tax exemption status in USA which means donations to the Foundation can avail tax benefit. Soon after the establishment of IITRF, which assured to transfer the full amount of donations to the alma mater, a constant flow of donations started from the US to IIT Roorkee through IITRF. It is a matter of great satisfaction that despite the economic hardships due to Covid-19 and the lack of alumni reunions during this period, IIT Roorkee has received more than Rs. 7.38 Crores of donations through IITRF during the last 2 years and 9 months i.e. since its establishment. This has helped in creating around 15 corpora in the names of donors to support several schemes for promoting excellence among students, faculty, and departments of the institute. These schemes include attractive scholarships for students, e.g., complete tuition fees support, fellowships and awards for students and faculty, Chair Professorships, and also a pathbreaking industry outreach and R&D activities.
